Places to Visit in Rye
Beaches and coast in rye, east sussex
There is so much to see and discover from the dramatic
sandstone cliffs of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve to
the expanse of flat ground and big skies at Pett Level, Rye
Harbour Nature Reserve, Romney Marshes and Dungeness.
The coast is most easily accessed at Winchelsea Beach or at
Camber Sands with its tall sand dunes. Beachcombing reveals
many types of shells and surprised from Sea Mouse to
Mermaid's Purse. Many wading birds can be found on
these beaches and seabirds catch their food, while seals are
less frequent.
The coastline of Rye Bay has changed dramatically, reflected
in the military defences from Henry VIII's Camber Castle, to
the Napoleonic defences of Martello Towers and the Royal
Military Canal At Pett Level there are the remains of
an ancient forest where 6,000 year old tree trunks and
leaves are revealed at low water.
